60+ Years Experience
Trusted motorcycle training from experienced instructors.
Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is the first step towards riding a motorcycle or scooter on UK roads.
At Think Bike Motorcycle Training, we’ve designed our learner training to help new riders build confidence from the very first lesson. Our experienced instructors provide a relaxed, supportive learning environment, ensuring you develop the skills needed to ride safely and confidently.
Whether you’re 16 and looking to ride a scooter or 17+ and planning to ride a motorcycle, we’ll guide you through every stage of your training.
If you’ve never ridden a geared motorcycle before, we recommend starting your CBT on one of our automatic scooters.
Learning on an automatic removes the added complexity of clutch control and gear changes, allowing you to focus on the core skills of safe riding, including:
Once you’ve successfully completed your CBT, you can choose to book an optional post geared conversion lesson, where we’ll teach you clutch control and gear changes at your own pace.
This progressive approach helps many new riders feel more relaxed and confident throughout their training.
Please note: Electric motorcycles or e-bikes cannot be used to complete a CBT. If you choose to complete your CBT on your own motorcycle, it must be road legal, taxed, insured and, where applicable, have a valid MOT.
A CBT is normally completed in a single day and consists of five practical elements, all delivered by one of our experienced instructors.
The aims of CBT, making suitable decisions about equipment and clothing, and meeting the eyesight rules.
How the motorcycle or moped works, what maintenance checks are needed, and getting a feel for the weight and balance of the vehicle.
Carrying out manoeuvres safely and under full control, using the brakes, changing gear, and carrying out observations.
Meeting the legal requirements to ride, attitude, positioning, separation distances, speed, anticipating what other road users may do, and preparing for developing hazards.
Riding in typical traffic conditions (including traffic lights, roundabouts, junctions, pedestrian crossings, gradients and bends), and carrying out a u-turn and an emergency stop.
